Talkback Challenge #4: The Seven Deadly Sins
For this week’s Talkback Challenge, there’s not one question but seven, based on the seven deadly sins. Here we go…
Lust – Do you enjoy games more if they have scantily clad and “interestingly proportioned” avatars? Do you like playing as one of these avatars? Why or why not?
Ugh. No, just no. I enjoy these games a lot less, even actively avoiding them. I have a tendency to lean more towards realism so it bothers me to see bare midriffs and inexplicable boob windows combined with metal/leather armor. I have a hard time feeling a sense of respect or connection to a character that’s suppose to be this epic fighter yet has forgotten her vital organs exist and need protection. The fact that it’s overwhelmingly the female characters who suffer from this that REALLY bothers me. If you want bare skin, at least make it equally bare on both sexes. It’s disheartening to get some leg armor that looks like pants on a man but magically changes into a platekini on a woman.
While I do not like scantily clad characters, I do not begrudge other players for liking them. To each their own. What I’d like to see is having the option to do either. Which is why I love games that have some sort of cosmetic system so you can style your character the way you want. Or better yet, have outfits with no stats so you can wear whatever you please.
Gluttony – Do you have a game backlog of unfinished games but still buy new games regardless? Why or why not?
Oh god yes. I have 237 games according to Steam and several more that are not on Steam, and I am nowhere near finishing the vast majority of them. I have a tendency to pick them up on sale and play them when I feel like it. And then in a few days, I’ll feel like playing something else so I’ll switch to something else. To be fair, some of them don’t have a “finish” (such as sandbox games) so I’m not sure how you’d count those.
Greed – Do you enjoy hand outs in a game? Have you ever opted to NOT do an action / in game activity because the rewards were lacking? Why or why not?
If we’re talking about hand outs from players, I won’t chase after them but if someone gives it to me directly, I will accept it and thank them. I’ve always been taught that it’s rude not to accept gifts. If the handout comes from the game itself, then yes I will take it. I wouldn’t say I generally enjoy it, I wouldn’t feel put out if I never got any handouts. Similarly, a lack of rewards has never been my sole reason for turning down an activity. I have opt out of something because it was either not enjoyable enough or I disagreed with it morally. Yes, I am one of those people that won’t take quests involving slavery and slaughtering innocents.
Sloth – Do you ever leech or AFK in a party? Do you discourage others from attempting things that you feel are difficult? Have you ever seen someone that needed help, but decided not to help them? Why or why not?
I don’t recall ever having leeched from a party. I generally like to contribute and I feel bad if I don’t think I’m helping the group very much. Besides, I’d be there to actually play the game and have fun, not to leech my way to max level.
I don’t discourage others from attempting things “because it’s haaaaaaard” but I have stated whether I thought we could actually do it or not. If we’re an under-geared group and the tank wants to pull everything in the instance at once, I’m going to speak up because I don’t like to die a million times in a dungeon. Sometimes we do make it and I’m pleasantly surprised, but often it ends in tragedy and frustration. I’m not saying I’m unwilling to give something a few tries, but I know when to give up as well.
The only people I don’t help who need it are the ones who are rude or just will not listen to the advice. If they’re demanding I help them or go against my instructions that were quite clear (as in possibly trolling), I’ll just ignore them. For players who are legitimately and kindly seeking help, I have no problem at all doing what I can.
Wrath – Ever get angry at other players and yell (or TYPE IN CAPS) at them? Have you ever been so angry to stalk a person around in game and / or in the forums? Why or why not?
Have I ever gotten angry at another player? Yep. I’ve been through a lot of WoW PUGs, man. I don’t think I’ve ever yelled at anyone in all caps though. Have I ever stalked anyone anywhere? Good lord no, that’s just creepy and taking it way too far. I just rant to my friends or log off to cool down instead.
Envy – Ever felt jealous of players who seem to be able to complete content you can’t? Do you ever suspect they are hacking or otherwise cheating? Why or why not?
I have been jealous of other players from time to time, particularly ones who are better at something than me. I try not to let it affect how I treat them because I know they’re not being better AT am. Instead I try to play better myself. I never suspect them of cheating, nor would I be jealous of them if they were. It seems silly to be jealous of a hacker.
Pride – Are you one of those people that demands grouping with other “elite” players? Do you kick players out of your team who you feel are under-performing? Why or why not?
I never thought of myself as an “elite” player so that would be a definite no. I’ll group with anyone who’s friendly and is willing to try/learn. The only people I’ve kicked were assholes or the aforementioned Sloth leechers.
