Look ma, I’m a video game music DJ!
One day when Lord Crumb and I were chatting while I was listening to a video game soundtrack. He could hear a little of it through the microphone and asked what I was listening to. This lead us to a discussion on how it was too bad there wasn’t a way for us to listen to the same music at the same time. As we all know, if you think of something, there’s probably already an app for that. Which is how I ended up finding plug.dj.
It’s like an internet radio site, but not only can you listen to other people playing music, but you can be a DJ yourself and even set up your own community for others to join. You don’t have to sign up if you’re just listening and if you do want to DJ, you don’t have to pay anything. There is a subscriber system but it’s optional and just unlocks stuff like avatars and badges. You don’t even have to upload any music, it’s all using Youtube videos.
I found that the existing video game music communities weren’t really my thing (I never played/owned most of the games they featured) so I quickly set one up and started adding songs. I found out that you can add entire Youtube playlists…and then I went kind of crazy with it. I currently have 83 playlists from a wide variety of different games and I’m adding more all of the time. Just to name a few:
Indies
- Banished
- Papo & Yo
- Wurm Online
- A Story About My Uncle
- Never Alone
- The Banner Saga
- To the Moon
- Transistor and Bastion
- The Fall
RPGs
- Baldur’s Gate and Icewindale series
- Neverwinter Nights series
- Planetscape Torment
- Mass Effect series
- Jade Empire
- Shadowrun Returns
- The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim
- Dragon Age series
Classics
- Pokemon (orchestral remix)
- Ocarina of Time (orchestral remix)
- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life
- Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9*
Random ones
- The Sims 1, 2, and 3
- Assassin’s Creed: Liberation

- Runescape 3
- Portal 1 & 2
- Mirror’s Edge
- Lords of Magic*
- Guild Wars 2
- Far Cry 3
- Endless Space
- Minecraft
- Command & Conquer: Red Alert 1*
Most are from games I’ve played or own (so I plan to play them eventually) with the exception of the ones marked with an asterick that Lord Crumb recommended. And thanks to the Plugmixer extension for Chrome, it automatically shuffles through all of the playlists so it’s one big wonderful mix of video game music.
I welcome anyone who wants to give it a listen to visit the Tune Den Video Game Music community, and if I’m not currently playing anything, feel free to play your own lists! Or you can listen to some other communities such as PixelRadio or Video Game Music. If you do swing by, let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions for more games I should add.
